Students enjoy hands-on aspect of new program
Students enrolled in BSC's new Mechanical Maintenance Technology program are training for positions that are in demand. And they are excited about the skills they are learning and time in the shop putting those hands-on skills to work. For every hour of class time, there are five hours in the shop. Jon Nadeau of Dunseith also enjoys the opportunity to make friends. "The students get along like a family, and the courses are taught well," he said. "There is a very open atmosphere in this program."

About 50 students are enrolled, and another 24 will be accepted each semester.

Job opportunities are expected to be available in the region and across the nation. Mechanical maintenance technicians install, repair and maintain industrial production and processing equipment. Managers at regional energy plants requested that BSC develop this program.

Classes are held in the new BSC - Mandan Campus at 1831 Twin City Dr. SE, Mandan. About half of the 12,500 sq. ft. building is devoted to lab space for the large industrial production and processing equipment and 18 welding booths required for training students.

Completion of the program leads to a certificate or an associate in applied science (AAS) degree. The program consists of 3 semesters of technical work; those completing the AAS degree will take an additional 15 credits of general education courses. The program provides a foundation in safety, fabrication, electricity, welding, mechanics, fluid power, hydraulics, and the use of tools. Industrial equipment used in this field includes motors, pumps, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, production machinery, pipeline distribution systems and automated equipment.

Job opportunities abound for clinical lab technicians
High-paying professional jobs in clinical and medical lab technology abound as North Dakota and the country face critical shortages of these vital health care workers.

The fast track to these exciting and well-paid careers is to apply now at BSC, where room exists for at least 14 freshman students next fall.

BSC has the only two-year accredited Clinical Lab/Medical Lab Technician program in North Dakota, Montana, and surrounding area. The profession offers four career track options with multiple job opportunities. Choose work in public health, industry, clinical analysis/research, and health care administration or higher education.

Established in 1978 in collaboration with Medcenter One, the lab science program expanded last year by adding St. Alexius Medical Center to its clinical rotation partnerships. BSC also plans to offer some CLT/MLT classes online to assist students in outlying areas.

For information, contact Angie Uhlich, clinical lab technology education director, at 701-224-5669, Angela.Uhlich@bsc.nodak.edu, or Cathy Janikowski, CLT education and outreach coordinator, 701-224-2485, Catherine.Janikowski@bsc.nodak.edu

Lidstrom Hall designed for today's students
The design of Lidstrom Hall is suited to the needs of today's students. Opening in the fall semester, the new residence hall features suite living arrangements and spaces that give students choices for gathering in large or small groups.

Lidstrom Hall is divided into four pods. Each pod includes four suites designed for four students per suite to share a common living area, restroom and two bedrooms. Each pod also has living quarters for a residence assistant, a room that is ADA accessible for one or two students, and a mini-lounge.

Other features are a meeting room adjacent to kitchen facilities, and a large laundry room. The main lounge on first floor will have a pool table and large screen TV, says Heather Sheehan, director of student life.

"We'll have programming such as movie nights in Lidstrom Hall, and these activities will be open to all of our campus residents," she said.

A balcony on second floor overlooks the lounge.

About 76 students will live in the 35,000 square-foot hall, which will be co-ed. The division of men and women will be based on applications, but could be divided by floor, says Sheehan.

Returning students who apply early enough will likely have first choice at living in Lidstrom Hall. For new students, it would be based on the date of their application.
BSC's other residence halls are Werner Hall for men and Swensen Hall for women.

Students save $$$ on book rental program
BSC students can save money on renting rather than purchasing textbooks, depending on the classes they are taking. With the new rental program, students have the option to rent textbooks at less than half to one-third the purchase price.

Bookstore manager Tanya Fuher said BSC's Bookstore is the only college store in the state that has the rental program. Students can rent books for English 110, speech, elementary statistics, human biology and Western civilization. Students in the Mechanical Maintenance Technology program also can rent their textbooks.

Fuher estimates that one of every four students who come into the bookstore asks what books the bookstore is renting.

"Our rental program has been very positive all the way around," she said. "We had one student from a local high school who chose BSC because her counselor told her about our book rental program and what a great bargain it is."
During fall semester, rentals of books for elementary statistics, speech, and two books for English 110 yielded a $35,080 savings for 766 students.
