ACADEMIC YEAR
Bismarck State College's regular academic year consists of two semesters, with classes beginning in late August and ending in mid-May. The Summer Session begins in late May or early June and continues for eight weeks.

DEFINITION OF SEMESTER AND CREDIT
A semester is a school term averaging 16 weeks of instruction. A semester hour of credit represents one 50-minute period of theory per week for one semester. Some classes require additional laboratory or shop periods or on the job training.

STUDENT CLASS LOAD
The average class load for a full-time student is 14 to 18 credit hours per semester. A student must enroll in at least 12 credit hours to be considered a full-time student during a regular semester. During a summer session, six credit hours constitute a minimum full-time enrollment. Full-time study is not recommended for special/unclassified students--those who have not met the necessary admissions requirements, or who are not pursuing a degree or program certificate in a vocational program. PETITION FOR EXTRA CLASS LOAD
Students must petition for permission to enroll in more than 20 credit hours per semester. All students enrolled in a summer session must petition for permission to enroll in more than 12 credit hours.

Forms to petition for the additional class load are available in the Student Records Office. Requests are considered based upon an examination of the student's need and ability to handle the extra load. A student must file a completed Petition in the Student Records Office on or by the end of the second day of classes during the semester for which the overload is requested. Students will be notified of the status of their petition on or before the published deadline to add classes.
