SynchroPhasor Training

Course Description: In a series of three modules, this course will provide training that is intended to support the rollout of the most recent revision of the Real Time Dynamic Monitoring System™ (RTDMS) that was released in September, 2007. This course will present information and training on a high-speed measurement device (SynchroPhasor) that will provide warnings of wide-area problems on the grid. This software tool will help operators and is disseminated under the NERC umbrella.

What are the online course elements? This course is instructor-led, asynchronous, and completely online. Learn from video/audio and text based lectures, practical application exercises and an exam. Instructors provide feedback on completed exercises and exam through email.

What are the computer requirements for this course?

  • In order to complete the practical exercises for this program, you need access to the Real-Time Dynamics Monitoring System software. This free software is available for download to any operator or engineer whose company is a signatory to NERC's new Operating Reliability Data Confidentiality Agreement. To view if you are on the list of signatories go to: http://www.nerc.com/~filez/ors.html. Look for the new signatory list under the "Related Files" section of this site.
  • If you are listed on the website and do not have access to the Real-Time Dynamics Monitoring System software, email Manu Parashar at parashar@electricpowergroup.com to receive a free copy of the software download. In your email, please include your contact information along with the request for the RTDMS software including the Small Signal Stability application add-on. If your company is a signatory to the NERC agreement, you will be sent instructions for downloading, installing and starting up the software. If someone within your company is already a user of RTDMS, Manu will let you know.
  • You'll need to follow the instructions in the course webcast to learn about starting up and navigating in RTDMS. In addition, the application does have a substantial "Help" area that shows you how to use the different features of this software.   • How do students and companies register? Both individual and group registrations are available.

    Individuals will be contacted by email within 3 days after registration. They will be provided with directions, student ID and password at that time. Please call (701) 224-5764 if you do not receive this information by the class start date. A certificate of completion will be mailed to the address on record upon completion of the course. The company contact person will be contacted by email within 3 days after registration with a list of registered from that company. The registered will be then be contacted by email with the directions, student IDs and passwords at that time. Please call (701) 224-5764 if you do not receive this information by the class start date. Certificates of completion will be mailed to the contact person upon completion of the course.
    *Must have a company contact person to register as a group.

    When do participants participate and complete the course work? The course contains 10 hours of content and participants will be allowed a maximum of 30 full days to complete the course. More time is only with instructor approval. Participants are provided a login and password to enter the course online.

    How many NERC CEH Hours will participant receive? Upon successful completion, you will receive 10 Hours. A certificate will be mailed to each participant after completion to the address provided in the registration.

    How much does it cost? The cost per participant is $140.00 ($14.00 per CEH). Individuals must pay be credit card or prior billing arrangements need to be made by calling (701) 224-5764. Company Group Registration may pay by credit card or be invoiced. Invoices will be sent to the contact person.

    What is the course schedule? The course is scheduled in two separate sessions from January 1 - June 30 and July 1 - December 31. Participants may register for the course anytime before May 1 for the January - June Session and November 1 for the July 1 - December 31 Session. The participants will have access to the material within 3 working days after registration and will have access to the course for 30 days.

    What is the cancellation policy if participant is unable to attend? Refunds granted at the participant's request will incur a $15 processing fee per class, to be deducted from the amount refunded. All refunds are made by mail unless paid with a credit card; in which case the card is credited. Please allow four weeks to process refunds. If cancellation is requested after the online course is accessed or less than one week prior to the course end date, no refund is available. Full refunds are guaranteed if BSC Energy Technology Division cancels a course.
