Gasification - Coal gasification can be used to convert coal into natural gas, liquid fuels, electricity, hydrogen, and other valuable energy products. Gasification breaks down coal into its useful hydrocarbons, rather than simply burning it. In a typical modern gasifier, steam and air or oxygen are introduced to the coal under high temperatures and pressures. As a result carbon molecules in coal break apart, setting off chemical reactions that typically produce a mixture of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and other gaseous compounds. These various process streams are then refined into useful, high-demand products. |
