Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a powerful geospatial computer-based software package that aids in the collection, maintenance, storage, analysis, output, and distribution of spatial data and geographic information. Bismarck State College offers the only 2-year GIS Technician program in North Dakota that offers a certificate, a certificate of completion, and an Associate in Applied Science degree.
The Associate in Applied Science degree in Geographic Information Systems has been designed to provide a core set of skills and competencies along with a broad knowledge of the discipline. The certificate emphasizes in GIS applications and computer technology. The certificate of completion is designed to offer proficiency in GIS as a supplement to another course of study or, an employer.
Individuals who have earned a degree or certificate in GIS are in high demand worldwide. GIS proficiency is one of the top 10 skills employers look for in job applicants because geospatial analysis skills span all disciplines. GIS technicians have the benefit of working inside and outdoors doing field work. People who work in the GIS industry work need good oral and written communication skills.
