Paramedics primarily provide care to emergency patients in an out of-hospital setting. Through proper patient assessment and medical care, the paramedic's goal is to prevent and reduce mortality and morbidity due to illness and injury. Paramedics are an essential component of the continuum of care and serve as links to other health care professionals. Paramedics are responsible and accountable to medical direction.

BSC offers a Program Certificate and an AAS degree in EMT Paramedic Technology. The Paramedic program is affiliated with St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck and F-M Ambulance Service in Fargo. Depending on the affiliation site, the program will begin either at the start of the spring, summer or fall semester. The program length will either be three or four semesters, depending on a predetermined need in the service area. Our goal is to ensure quality education and to prepare the students to become competent entry level EMT-Paramedic practitioners. The program with St. Alexius is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The program prepares the student for the National Registry written and practical examinations.

Clinical and field internship experiences will be completed concurrently with the classroom schedule. In Bismarck, inhospital clinical experiences will be completed at St. Alexius Medical Center and other approved hospitals in Dickinson, Mobridge, Williston, and Minot. The Fargo program has sites across North Dakota and Minnesota, including hospitals in Fargo, Devils Lake, Cavalier, and Grand Forks, N.D., and Bemidji, Brainerd, and metro Minneapolis, Minn. Other approved sites will serve as in-hospital clinical sites. Field Internship experiences for the Fargo program will be completed at F-M Ambulance in Fargo, Altru Ambulance in Grand Forks, North Memorial and Gold Cross Ambulance services in several Minnesota locations and at rural North Dakota and Minnesota services as needed. Field Internship experiences for the Bismarck program will be completed at Metro Area Ambulance Service, Dickinson Area Ambulance Service, Williston Ambulance Service, Community Ambulance Service in Minot, and other approved field internship sites.

The program is subject to limited enrollment. Application deadline is Nov. 1 at St. Alexius and Aug. 1 or Dec. 1 at F-M Ambulance. Prospective students must complete an application process that includes an interview and written examination. A criminal background check may required before clinicals begin. Prerequisites include current CPR and Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certifications. Qualified applicants will be enrolled in the order they apply. A nonrefundable tuition deposit of $100 is required of all students accepted into this program.

Students may obtain either a Program Certificate (43 credits) or an Associate in Applied Science Degree, which requires additional general education courses. Go to: Graduation/General Education Requirements for AAS degree requirements.
