The ability to communicate effectively is essential in all careers and throughout life. A solid foundation in speech is particularly vital in the practice of law, politics, public relations, and broadcasting, as well as business and the teaching professions. The BSC Communication Arts curriculum provides a balance between speech theory and practice, as well as core and selected communications courses. Students who pursue the BSC Communication Arts transfer pathway obtain the first two years of coursework toward a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university.
Preparation
High school students benefit from taking classes in speech, English, creative writing, and theater. Participation in drama and speech activities, forensics, debate, DECA, FFA, or student government is helpful.
Requirements
Those completing the suggested curriculum requirements receive an Associate in Arts degree.
Bismarck State College has many cooperative, articulation, or transfer agreements with postsecondary institutions both inside and outside of the North Dakota University System. Some of these agreements are established to allow students to remain on campus as they complete their bachelor’s degree. In all cases, students seeking to transfer after completing a degree at BSC should consult the academic catalog of their destination college and work with their academic advisor to plan for this transition.
